I was craving for some agar-agar so I bought a packet of Swallow Globe brand Agar-Agar in white! Somehow, I prefer agar-agar to the japanese konnyaku jelly. I like the texture and the feel of the agar-agar between my teeth (as compared to the softer and chewier cousin of the agar-agar, konnyaku jelly)!
Agar is derived from red algae. So it’s vegetarian! And agar-agar is apparently from Malay, meaning jelly. Agar-agar is approximately 80% fibre and help regulate the movements of your intestine. It is also known as kanten in Japan. I read from Wikipedia that the agar-agar’s (or kanten’s) bulk quality is behind one of the latest fad diets in Asia, the kanten diet. Once ingested, kanten triples in size and absorbs water. This results in the consumer feeling more full. Sounds interesting?!
I bought the white agar-agar! Those coloured ones look really pretty but it contains food dye or food colouring, which just isn’t too healthy. So the white one will do! I love agar-agar! I used 1/3 of the sugar indicated on the packet instructions because I wasn’t too comfortable with ingesting too much sugar. I used 80g of white sugar for my agar-agar (that is for 1L of water and 12g of agar-agar powder). The end product was really good! The agar-agar wasn’t sweet and the sweetness was just right! PERFECT, I would say. Love agar-agar and they make a really good REFRESHING dessert!
And agar-agar powder is quite cheap, you can get a satchet for about $1 and it makes one huge jelly (as in the picture)! I think I would want to start stocking up on more agar-agar powder!
